In this 30 minute, 35 year old recording, my great-grandfather discusses his trip across the country from New York to California in the summer of 1923, when he was 16 years old. The trip took over a month in a Dodge Touring. The family camped out on the side of the road each night, sleeping in an army tent and cooking with a camp stove.
The roads turned to dirt after Iowa (which he pronounces “eye-OH-wa”). When the family returned to New York in 1929, the roads were so improved that the trip only took six days.
