Welcome to Substack, where the sky doesn’t cave in when you string a few words together.
People are flocking here because they are tired of the unbridled censorship, shadow-banning, “fact-checking”, propaganda, lies, and authoritarianism.
In 2019, a dear friend of mine wrote this:
A friend here wrote about Alex Jones. Not only is he banned from FB, Youtube and Twitter but he is soon to be banned from Instagram. This time he wrote something about oppression.
I can't stand the man for more than ONE minute…
Nevertheless, his case is one of the signs that the internet is about to change dramatically… to think that as a kid I dreamt of living in a Star Trek environment and now waking up in a 1984 George Orwell scenario. I DON'T like it…
And if you say no one cares, think again. It's about our selfies and fake life projected here that no one cares. Thankfully ideas are the most powerful means of changing the world. This is where we live in all our lives. Everything that is rotten and sick will, yet again, die. The most important thing of our times is the fact that we can know what is and more than ever before.
We cannot say we didn't know. We cannot say we were controlled.
We did. We weren't.
This is why the internet is changing. Because people, huge numbers of people, got the chance to know. We CANNOT let that go. And I am sure we won't.
Prescient words. Banning Alex Jones or Donald Trump is nothing now.
Ban hammer go brrrrr like money printer. Everyone gets a car ban.
But as she predicted, the internet is changing. People are fleeing the old social media and information platforms like rats on a sinking ship. Never before have so many people, all around the globe, all at the same time, realized how very wrong everything is. A critical mass appears to be tired of the control freaks, the greed, the incompetence, the corruption. And maybe they’re not going back now.
I can dream. In my worst moments, I’m the bitterest cynic. In my best, perhaps a starry-eyed idealist.
Getting back to my friend’s reference to Star Trek, I’m reminded of the episode The Omega Glory.
Kirk and crew beam down to a planet where the grunting savage Yangs, barely able to use language, are fighting the Kohms, a group that has been supplied with superior technology by another Starfleet captain (Tracey).
Tracey is a turncoat. He’s violated the Prime Directive by becoming the Kohms’ corrupt leader, supplying them technology because they appear to be more civilized and superior.
Crucially, he’s also become psychotic and believes he’s found the fountain of youth. This intergalactic villain, in his mind, is a benevolent dictator helping to advance humanity.
Hm.
…
When Kirk and Spock beam down to the planet, Tracey holds them hostage and throws them in jail with the primitive Yangs, lest they derail his plans.
At this point in the episode, the tide turns. The dirty Yangs, dressed in animal skins and cooped up in a jail cell with Spock and Kirk, hear them use the word “freedom” and attack them for saying it.
We learn that “freedom” is an ancient “worship word” for the Yangs, and is not allowed to be uttered by ordinary people.
Eventually Kirk and Spock connect more dots.
Yang. Yankee. Kohm. Communist.
Spock conjectures that the history of the planet had paralleled Earth’s until endless wars sent it back to the Stone Age.
The hypothesis is confirmed when an old American flag and a crumbling American Constitution are produced.
Of course, by this time, civilization has degraded to such an extent that the Yangs can no longer read, and the pronunciation and meaning of the words has been totally lost.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the 4 minute ending of the 1968 episode.
The question we all want the answer to now is this.
How will the 2022 version of The Omega Glory end?
"They must apply to everyone, or they mean nothing!"
Sadly, even Captain James Tiberius Kirk would be banned from Twitter in 2022.
I loved the original Star Trek series and didn't watch much of the subsequent ones. My favourite episode ("Arena") was the one with the Gorn. So, I loved the analogy in this article.
